Taxing units must comply with truth-in-taxation requirements when holding public hearings, considering budgets, and setting rates to impose property taxes.
Truth-in-taxation laws require that when a proposed tax rate for the entity's budget exceeds the rollback rate or the effective rate, whichever is lower, the taxing unit's governing body must vote to place the proposal to adopt the tax rate on the agenda as an action item. If the motion passes, the governing body must schedule two public hearings on the proposed tax rate and notify the public of dates, times, and places for these hearings.
The City Council of the City of Kaufman will also hold a public hearing on the annual operating proposed budget and the Proposed Property Tax Rate. The public is encouraged to review the City's proposed budget on the City's website or view a paper copy of the budget in the City Secretary's office. The public may comment in person at the scheduled public hearing, and provide written comments either through mail, email to kaufmancitysec@kaufmantx.org, or by fax at 972-932-6288. Any written comments received will be included with information provided to the City Council for consideration.
Members of the public are encouraged to provide input through any means available and/or attend the public hearing during the budget process.
